LUXURY BLANKET BAY VILLA WINNER

May, 2019

Imagine building a new villa for one of the countrys top luxury lodges

and also apartments for a renowned architect and a leading interior

designer all at the same time.

Those were tasks facing Queenstown project management and

construction firm Triple Star Management Ltd in 2017.

On Friday, at a gala dinner in Auckland, the 50-strong team won a raft

of New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, a competition run by the

Registered Master Builders Association, for the projects.

Chief among them was being named as national winner in the Tourism &

Leisure category, for the $6.5 million Blanket Bay Villa project, off the

Glenorchy Queenstown Road.

Triple Stars won the same award in 2016, for the Aro Ha Health

Retreat, off the same road.

Blanket Bays 650sqm villa, with its traditional gable design, hardwood

beams, cedar-lined ceilings and liberal local schist, also won a gold

and the value award in the $5-$15m category.

Thats something were pretty proud of, Triple Star director Pete

Campbell says.

Architect firm Mason Wales completed the resource consent drawings

but the building consent was done by Triple Star, using an external

draughtsman.

It was a fast-track project, where the design was still being undertaken

as we were constructing the build, so the design only really ever got

completed towards the end a proper fast-track process.

Judges praised the choice of materials, the quality of the end result,

use of preconstructed elements including the precast chimneys, and the

success of the project on an exposed location with challenging access.

Triple Star also won gold for its $14.5m (construction budget) project to

build Lake Haze a three-apartment building on the shores of Lake

Hayes.

The 2000sqm building, designed by Aucklands Patterson Architects,

includes apartments owned by New Zealand architect, Simon

Carnachan, and top interior designer Virginia Fisher, making the internal

fit-outs detailed and high quality.

We were building both Blanket Bay and Lake Haze at the same time so

they certainly utilised all of our office resources and our site-focused

resources.

Blanket Bay is quite remote and we were building [the villa] while

ensuring the lodge was able to maintain operations, so that had its

challenges.

It was through the winter as well. We put a big tent over the Lake

Haze building to mitigate some of the weather issues.

Campbell says working for such high-end clients is both satisfying and a

little stressful: You get to work with very nice products and end up

with a very good result but its challenging because the expectations are

set very high.

So its a bit of a big tick for the team on both those projects because

they achieved the high standards that were required.

Hawkins and ASC Architects took home a silver in Education Projects

for the new Wakatipu High School.

And the rebuild of Jacks Point Clubhouse after the 2016 fire won a

silver in Heritage & Restoration for Naylor Love Central Otago Ltd,

Peak Projects International Ltd and Warnock Architecture Ltd.
