Halberg Trust chief executive Steve Hall has been named as the new principal for Wakatipu High School.

The school's board of trustees this month announced the former Wakatipu High School teacher and year 11 dean, will take over the position.

Mr Hall was director of Outward Bound at Anakiwa for five years before taking up the role with the Halberg Trust.

Chairman Alistair Nicholson said the board had been mindful of the "exceptional work' of staff in curriculum delivery and the unique circumstances at the school when selecting the new principal.

"Finding an exceptional leader with a strong educational background was our primary goal and we are really excited to have found Steve Hall to fulfil that role.'

Mr Hall will start in the position during the third term.

His appointment follows the dismissal, reinstatement and resignation of the former principal Lyn Cooper last year.

Former James Hargest principal Paul O'Connor has been acting principal in the interim.

Mr Halls resume includes leadership and management positions along with educational expertise. Having been Year 11 Dean and Head of Department at WHS in the 90s, he went on complete an MBA at the University of Canterbury and a course in non-profit management at Harvard University.

In a six year term (2003 2009) as School Director at Outward Bound School, Mr Hall achieved outstanding success culminating in the school being awarded the Best Places to Work award (in both 2005 and 2007) with Hall himself receiving the Emerging Leader Award from the Sir Peter Blake Trust. His time there included a major review of curriculum which resulted in world-leading learning outcomes for students.

Having a passion for young people and their education, as well as a love for the outdoors and the Wakatipu, the position of Principal at WHS has always been on Mr Halls radar. "Having greatly enjoyed my time at WHS in the nineties, this was an exciting opportunity to combine my passion for young people and education with my leadership experience to take WHS forward into the future. As a family we are really excited about being part of the wonderful Wakatipu community again".

Mr Hall is 47 years old and is currently the CEO of the Halberg Trust (the organisation tasked with providing disabled people the opportunity to participate in sport). He is married (Sally Mingaye) and has three sons (Trent 15, Christopher 10, and Stefan 6). He is due to take up his new position during the third term.
